Gallons (gal)
Definition
A US gallon (gal) is a unit of volume equal to 4 US quarts, 128 US fluid ounces, or approximately 3.78541 liters.
History
The US gallon is based on the English wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, standardized by Queen Anne in 1707. It differs from the British imperial gallon (4.546 L) which was established in 1824.
Current use
US gallons are the standard unit for gasoline pricing and sales, milk containers, water jugs, pool capacity, and paint quantities in the United States. Fuel efficiency is measured in miles per gallon (mpg).
UK Gallons
Definition
A UK gallon (imperial gallon) is a unit of volume equal to 4 imperial quarts, 8 imperial pints, or approximately 4.54609 liters. It is about 20% larger than a US gallon.
History
The imperial gallon was defined in the 1824 British Weights and Measures Act as the volume of 10 pounds of water at 62°F. It replaced the earlier English wine gallon (which became the US gallon) and the English beer gallon.
Current use
Imperial gallons are still used for fuel economy ratings in the United Kingdom and Canada (miles per imperial gallon). They occasionally appear in older British recipes and some Commonwealth country measurements.
